Whitening (teeth whitening) Procedures

Zoom! ™ Chairside Teeth Whitening System

The Zoom! ™ Chairside Teeth Whitening System is Discus Dental, Inc.'s entry in the professional teeth whitening products marketplace. This is an all-inclusive whitening system. By this we mean that Discus Dental, Inc. supplies a dentist with all of the needed bleaching materials: the tooth whitener, the bleaching light, and even many of the disposable and single patient use items that your dentist will require when performing Zoom! ™ whitening treatments.

What type of tooth whitener is used with the Zoom! ™ teeth whitening system?

The Zoom! ™ whitening system uses a hydrogen peroxide based tooth whitener. This product comes prepackaged as two individual components, a 32% hydrogen peroxide gel and a proprietary "activator". These two components are then mixed at the time of application to form a working gel that has a 25% concentration of hydrogen peroxide and a pH between 7.5 and 8.5.

Is a bleaching light used with the Zoom! ™ teeth whitening process?

The Zoom! ™ teeth whitening system protocol includes the use of a mercury metal halide light. Information from Discus Dental, Inc. indicates that the wavelength of the light emitted from their units is in the range of 350-400nm (meaning that the light has a violet coloration). The implication associated with the use of a bleaching light is that the company believes that light of this specific wavelength activates some aspect of the Zoom! ™ tooth whitener so to enhance its whitening effect.
(More about bleaching lights used with profession teeth whitening systems and why they may not be needed...)

The Zoom! light unit has an infrared filter. This is significant because filtering these emissions helps to minimize the amount of heat generated at the surface of the teeth during the whitening treatment. When the Zoom! ™ bleaching light is placed into position it is capable of illuminating all of the teeth being treated (both upper and lower) simultaneously.

Does the Zoom! ™ bleaching light produce a heating effect on the teeth being whitened?

Evaluations have shown that the Zoom! ™ bleaching light does not create a significant temperature change in the patient's teeth during the bleaching treatment.
(More about why it is important that a bleaching light does not produce a significant heating effect...)

How much did your dentist's Zoom! ™ bleaching light cost?
Just out of curiosity and for your own information your dentist probably paid in excess of $1,500.00 for their Zoom! ™ teeth whitening system bleaching light.
(More about lasers and lights used with profession teeth whitening systems and why a bleaching light may not be needed...)

How long does it take your dentist to perform a Zoom! ™ Chairside Teeth Whitening System treatment?

Zoom! ™ teeth whitening treatments usually take about 90 minutes from start to finish. Each bleaching session is broken down into three individual applications of the Zoom! ™ teeth whitener, with the duration of each application being 20 minutes. This means that the cumulative exposure of the patient's teeth to the Zoom! ™ teeth whitening gel is 60 minutes. Pre and post treatment preparations and activities round the total treatment time up to about 90 minutes.

Does the Zoom! ™ teeth whitening system make use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

At the completion of the Zoom! teeth whitening treatment additional whitener (tray-based teeth whitening product) and instructions are given to the patient so they can continue the bleaching process at home.
(More about the use and purpose of at-home teeth whiteners after professional teeth whitening treatments...)

What are the individual steps of the Zoom! ™ chairside teeth whitening system?

The procedure your dentist follows when performing Zoom! ™ chairside teeth whitening system treatments does not vary greatly from those general steps we illustrate and describe for the typical professional teeth whitening process. Specifically however, as you read through our pages please note that the Zoom! ™ whitening system does include the use of a paint on dental dam, "activation" of the whitening gel with a bleaching light, post-treatment application of fluoride (1.1% neutral sodium fluoride gel), and continued teeth whitening treatments with an at-home whitener.

Should you choose the Zoom! chairside teeth whitening system?

This is a decision that needs to be made with the help of the dentist who will perform the whitening treatments but yes, generally speaking the Zoom! ™ teeth whitening system is a fine product and is made by a company that seems to have a sincere interest in producing a quality product. The results a patient experiences with the Zoom! ™ chairside teeth whitening system should be as good as with any other quality professional teeth whitening product.

Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ Teeth Whitening System

The Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitening system is Ultradent, Inc.'s professional teeth whitening product. This is one of the professional teeth whitening systems where the manufacturer considers using a bleaching light during the whitening process as optional.

What type of tooth whitener is used with the Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitening system?

The Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitening system employs a hydrogen peroxide based bleaching gel. This whitener comes prepackaged as two individual components that are mixed at the time of application so to create a bleaching gel that has a 38% hydrogen peroxide concentration and a pH of 7.

Is a bleaching light used with the Opalescence ® teeth whitening process?

Ultradent, Inc. states that using a bleaching light with their Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ product is optional. If the dentist performing the whitening treatment chooses to use a light then Ultradent, Inc. considers a standard "curing" light to be appropriate. A curing light is that type of light source that a dentist uses to cure white filling material (dental bonding). The light output of curing lights has a blue to blue-green coloration.

Does the Opalescence ® whitening system produce a heating effect on the teeth being bleached?

The only potential for producing a heating effect on the teeth being bleached is if the Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ whitener is used in conjunction with a curing light. Curing lights are designed so to illuminate just one or two teeth at a time. This means that during the bleaching process the dentist will need to move the light from one tooth to another repeatedly. Ultradent, Inc. recommends 30 seconds of light exposure on a tooth at a time, for what probably accumulates to a total of about 2 minutes per tooth over the course of the entire bleaching session. When following these directions it seems unlikely that a significant heating effect will take place.

How much did your dentist pay for the light that they use with the Opalescence ® teeth whitening system?

If your dentist does choose to use a light with the Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitener it will be one that they already own and use when performing other dental procedures.

How long does it take your dentist to perform an Opalescence ® teeth whitening treatment?

Professional Opalescence ® teeth whitening treatments usually take about 90 minutes from start to finish. Each bleaching session is broken down into four individual applications of the Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitener, with the duration of each application being 15 minutes. This means that the cumulative exposure of the patient's teeth to the Opalescence ® teeth whitening gel is 60 minutes. Pre and post treatment preparations and activities round the total treatment time up to about 90 minutes.

Does the Opalescence ® teeth whitening system protocol include the use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

Using at-home teeth whitening treatments after the professional teeth whitening process has been completed is an option that Ultradent, Inc. leaves up to the discretion of the dentist performing the treatment. No doubt if one is used they would recommend that it be one of their own Opalescence ® take home whiteners.

What are the individual steps of the Opalescence ® teeth whitening system?

The procedure your dentist follows when performing Opalescence ® Xtra ® Boost ™ teeth whitening system treatments does not vary greatly from those general steps we illustrate and describe for the typical professional teeth whitening process. Specifically however, as you read through our pages please note that the Opalescence ® whitening system does include the use of a paint on dental dam, the "activation" of the whitening gel with a bleaching light is considered optional, as is the need for at-home teeth whitening treatments

Should you choose the Opalescence ® teeth whitening system?

Per our usual comments in response to this question, this is a decision that needs to be made by you and the dentist performing the whitening treatments. The Opalescence ® teeth whitening system has a reputation of being a quality professional grade product. The results a patient experiences with the Opalescence ® teeth whitening system should be as good as with any other professional teeth whitening system.

BriteSmile ® Teeth Whitening System

BriteSmile, Inc. makes the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system. BriteSmile ® treatments are available through the BriteSmile ® "Associated Center" network (meaning participating dentist's offices) and also several BriteSmile ® "whitening spas" located in a few cities across the nation. You may be familiar with this brand name. BriteSmile, Inc. advertises their whitening system fairly aggressively.

What type of tooth whitener does the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system use?
The BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system uses BriteSmile ® Procedural Gel as its whitener. This is a hydrogen peroxide based bleaching compound that comes prepackaged and ready for use. It has a 15% hydrogen peroxide concentration and a pH of 6.5. Current protocol for the use of this whitener includes the addition of an "accelerator" before it is applied for the second and third times. This step enhances the whitener's effectiveness.

Is a bleaching light used with the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening process?

The BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system protocol includes the use of either a gas plasma or light emitting diode (LED) bleaching light. These lights are manufactured by BriteSmile ® specifically for use with their in-office bleaching system. What these two types of light units have in common is that they emit light having a wavelength between 400 and 500nm (light that is blue-green in color). BriteSmile ® states that light in this wavelength range activates a "photo-initiator" incorporated into the BriteSmile ® tooth whitener, thus enhancing its whitening effect. When the light is placed into position it is capable of simultaneously illuminating all of the patient's teeth (both upper and lower) being bleached.

Does the BriteSmile ® whitening system produce a heating effect on the teeth being bleached?

No, the light units used with the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system have not been shown to produce a significant heating effect on the teeth being bleached.
(More about why it is important that a bleaching light does not produce a significant heating effect...)

How much did your dentist pay for the bleaching light that they use with the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system?

Unlike the arrangement found with other professional teeth whitening systems, in the case of the BriteSmile ® system BriteSmile, Inc. owns the bleaching light not the dentist. The cost of using the light is in turn passed on to the dentist on a per patient basis.

How long does it take your dentist to perform a BriteSmile ® teeth whitening treatment?

BriteSmile ® teeth whitening treatments take about 90 minutes from start to finish. Each bleaching session is broken down into three individual applications of the BriteSmile ® teeth whitener, with the duration of each application being 20 minutes. This means that the cumulative exposure of the patient's teeth to the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening gel is 60 minutes. Pre and post treatment preparations and activities round the total treatment time for the patient up to 90 minutes or so.

Does the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system include the use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

Britesmile, Inc. does manufacture teeth whitening products for use at-home but using these items is an option and not a formal part of the professional Britesmile ® teeth whitening system protocol.

What are the individual steps of the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system?

The procedure your dentist follows when performing BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system treatments does not vary greatly from those general steps we illustrate and describe for the typical professional teeth whitening process. Specifically however, as you read through our pages please note that the BriteSmile ® whitening system does include the use of a paint on dental dam and also the "activation" of the whitening gel with a bleaching light.

Should you choose the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system?

This is a decision that needs to be made with the help of the dentist who will perform the whitening treatments. In general terms however, yes the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system is a good product and is made by a company that has a keen interest in the area of teeth whitening. The results a patient will experience with the BriteSmile ® teeth whitening system should be as good as with any other quality professional teeth whitening product.

LaserSmile ™ Teeth Whitening System.

The LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system is manufactured by Biolase Technology, Inc. In dental circles this company is probably best known for manufacturing the Waterlase ® dental laser. The LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system uses the LaserSmileT diode laser.

What type of tooth whitener is used with the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system?

The LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system uses a hydrogen peroxide based bleaching gel. This whitener comes prepackaged and ready to use. It has a 35% hydrogen peroxide concentration and an independent evaluation has found it to have a pH of around 4.

What kind of laser is used with the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening process?

The LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system requires the use of their LaserSmileT diode laser. As you might expect the emission spectrum of this laser is very precise. Its emissions lie in the 798 to 815nm range which is part of the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The requirement that this laser must be used implies that the company believes that emissions of this specific wavelength "photo-activate" the LaserSmile ™ whitener and therefore increases the efficiency of the whitening process.

Does the LaserSmile ™ laser produce a heating effect on the teeth being whitened?

Since the emissions of the LaserSmileT laser lie in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum there certainly could be concern that a heating effect might be produced. As it turns out however during the teeth whitening process this effect is avoided because the laser is only exposed to a few teeth at a time and for only about 15 seconds of exposure at a time. During the entire whitening process (about 24 minutes) it is likely that each tooth will only receive about 2 to 4 minutes of exposure to the laser's output.
(More about why it is important that a bleaching light does not produce a significant heating effect...)

How much did your dentist's LaserSmileT diode laser cost?

Just out of curiosity and for your own information your dentist probably paid in excess of $20,000 for their LaserSmile ™ laser. This laser however does have other dental applications so your dentist can use it for other procedures too, not just teeth whitening.
(More about lasers and lights used with profession teeth whitening systems and why a bleaching light may not be needed...)

How long does it take your dentist to perform a LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening treatment?

LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening treatments usually take less than a hour from start to finish. Each bleaching session is broken down into three individual applications of the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitener, with the duration of each application being 8 minutes. This means that the cumulative exposure of the patient's teeth to the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening gel is 24 minutes. Pre and post treatment preparations and activities round the total treatment time up to about a hour or slightly less.

Does the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system make use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

Continued bleaching with an at-home teeth whitening product after the completion of the LaserSmile ™ treatment is an option left up to the discretion of the dentist and the patient but is not a formal part of the system's protocol.

What are the individual steps of the LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system?

The procedure your dentist follows when performing LaserSmile ™ teeth whitening system treatments does not vary greatly from those general steps we illustrate and describe for the typical professional teeth whitening process. Although in a fashion different from all of the other professional teeth whitening systems we discuss on the LaserSmile ™ system employs the use of a laser as the bleaching light.

Should you choose the LaserSmile ™ professional teeth whitening system?

This is a question that should be directed to the dentist performing the whitening treatment. In regards to the system itself LaserSmile ™ should be able to give you results similar in nature as to those achieved with other professional teeth whitening systems. One advantage of the LaserSmile ™ system is that the treatment time generally runs less than a hour whereas most other systems require about 90 minutes.

The company states that they include a desensitizing agent in their whitener's formulation so to help to minimize the potential for bleaching related sensitivity.

Is a bleaching light used with the Rembrandt ® teeth whitening process?

The Rembrandt ® teeth whitening system protocol includes the use of a plasma arc light (named the Rembrandt ® Sapphire ™). This bleaching light can be fitted with the Rembrandt ® Whitening Crystal ™ so to allow the dentist to simultaneously treat both the patient's upper and lower teeth. The wavelength of the light emitted from this unit is in the range of 400 to 525nm (meaning that the light has a blue-green coloration). The implication associated with the use of a bleaching light is that the company believes that light of this specific wavelength activates some aspect of the Rembrandt ® tooth whitener so to enhance its whitening effect.

Does the Rembrandt ® bleaching light produce a heating effect on the teeth being whitened?

The Rembrandt ® Sapphire ™ filters out the infrared emissions created by the plasma arc light so that it does not create a heating effect on the teeth being whitened.

How much did your dentist's Rembrandt ® bleaching light cost?
Just out of curiosity and for your own information your dentist probably paid in excess of $4,000 for their Rembrandt ® Sapphire ™ bleaching light.

How long does it take your dentist to perform a Rembrandt ® teeth whitening treatment?

Should you choose the Rembrandt ® professional teeth whitening system as a means to lighten your teeth?

This question can only be answered after a discussion with the dentist who will perform the whitening treatments but yes, generally speaking the Rembrandt ® teeth whitening system is a good product and is made by a company that is well known for and has a long history in creating teeth whitening products.

Does the Niveous ™ teeth whitening system protocol include the use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

The need for using an at-home tray-based teeth whitener after the professional teeth whitening process has been completed is an option left up to the discretion of dentist performing the whitening treatments.

What are the individual steps of the Niveous ™ teeth whitening system?

The procedure your dentist follows when performing Niveous ™ teeth whitening system treatments does not vary greatly from those general steps we illustrate and describe for the typical professional teeth whitening process. Specifically however, as you read through our pages please note that the Opalescence ® whitening system does make use of a paint on dental dam, the "activation" of the whitening gel with a bleaching light is considered to be optional, as are continued teeth whitening treatments performed at-home.

Should you choose the Niveous ™ teeth whitening system?

Per our usual comments in response to this question, this is a decision that needs to be made by you and the dentist performing the whitening treatments. The Niveous ™ teeth whitening system is a good product and is made by a company that has a history of making quality dental products. The results a patient experiences with the Niveous ™ teeth whitening system should be as good as with any other quality professional teeth whitening system.
